Indigenizing Curriculum

Participants will use their own work as a base to build from that will give effect to local knowledge, school aspirations, and iwi participation. Topics covered in this session include; decolonization, place-based philosophy, community and mana whenua engagement, learning environments.

Ngāti Toa
Iwi History

Delivered by Dr Taku Parai

The depiction of the Pre-colonial era for Ngāti Toa will provide grounding, understanding and māramatanga about iwi history for participants who attend this course. We explore the period of time our tupuna lived in Kawhia, examining people of influence in the iwi, and the challenges and sacrifices our people faced on Te Heke Mai Raro (the migration from Kawhia to Porirua) under the leadership of Te Rauparaha.

Te Rerenga o Porirua

Te Rerenga o Porirua explores the cultural richness and diversity of the Porirua community. This interactive two-day workshop provides participants with a deeper understanding of Porirua's history, empowering them to apply what they've learned in both their professional and personal lives. Focusing on fostering inclusion, unity, and actionable change, this course helps you navigate and contribute to diverse spaces while strengthening your connection to the community.

He Whakahāngai

Delivered by Nirvana Wineera

This course is designed to support educators to implement local curriculum through the use of iwi-specific resources.  Participants will interact with these resources while building confidence to on-share and apply in all learning environments.  This session covers  ngā waiata o Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Toa history, values and tikanga.

Cultural Awareness

Delivered by Te Ariki Wi-Neera

This course is about increasing the cultural competency of our council partners and developing their engagement toolbox to create culturally safe spaces. The topics covered in this workshop are our Ngāti Toa history, our treaty settlement, our partnership, and developing a unique Ngāti Toa engagement toolbox.

Mauri Ora

Delivered by Calisa Hippolite

A Mauri Ora Framework is a kaupapa Māori model which can be used to guide all processes, systems and programmes. This holistic approach to engagement considers the bigger picture and all elements in relation to one's life. This way of working enables people to be navigators of their own pathways forward and identify and celebrate all aspects of who they are. 

He Ara Anamata

Delivered by Pairama Wright, Jay Elkington, Joy Aing, Ethan Sagar, Daniel Parata and Kathleen Filo

This six-week programme is designed to prepare rangatahi and whānau for the workforce. Working with six facilitators, we will help teach rangatahi a range of skills that will help them in their ideal career path. At the end of the course, we will connect rangatahi with industry professionals in hopes that they will find employment.

Intro to Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga

Delivered by Pairama Wright

This course is an introduction to Te Reo and tikanga Māori. Participants will learn entry level Te Reo Māori and explore the connection between the language and culture.

The course is a 1-hour workshop delivered over 8 weeks.

Pōwhiri and Tikanga Experience

Delivered by Dr Taku Parai

Course participants will learn the process of a pōwhiri, as well as the purpose and cultural significance behind each element that is performed during this process. Our facilitator will teach you the kawa of Takapūwāhia Marae, as well as the associated stories, history and whakapapa which inform the pōwhiri process.
